This is Sebastian, an occupier at Occupy Wall Street who came all the way from Portland, Oregon to join the protests early in their development. I met him while traveling through town when I stopped to read his sign. It reads:

The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, meekness, and self control. Against such there is no law.

In return, Sebastian read my Bradley Manning Support Network pin and T-Shirt, which lead to a conversation about how instrumental Bradley Manning, if he actually did what it has been alleged he has done, was to both Wikileaks’ and, indirectly, to the Occupy Wall Street movement itself, a sentiment recently re-expressed by Michael Moore at Occupy San Francisco.

This is Mauricio, an occupier at Occupy Wall Street and one of the many people there who noticed my “Bradley Manning Support Network” T-Shirt and pins. He immediately told me about his admiration for the young soldier for his patriotism and courage. I asked if he would pose for an “I Am Bradley Manning” photo petition contribution. When he said yes, I tore out a page from my notebook on the spot and handed him my pen. :)

This is Nona. She lives in New York and visits Occupy Wall Street regularly. I met her while traveling through town. She spoke of the important revelations that the Wikileaks releases have had on public knowledge of government policy and then agreed to pose for a photo for this campaign. :)

This is Chris Coon. He is homeless in New York City and sells poems for $1 each for himself and his family in person and from his website at AskAMillion.com. I bought a poem from him while I was visiting Occupy locations across the East coast after we got into a discussion about Bradley Manning and the important role whistleblowers play in protecting free speech and ensuring government transparency. That’s when he agreed to pose for a photo for this campaign. :)
Thank you Chris, and thank you Bradley Manning!

Japanese pornography is so dominant here [in China] and they really promote the image of young innocent submissive female, and they appear to be underage. I interviewed a lot of guys who say that, yes, this is my primary fantasy. I want to see this submissive girl. What does it mean? I think it means that it gives the guy the sense of empowerment. They can handle the submissive girl. So in this fantasy world, they can deal with this kind of girl, but it doesn’t mean that they have this girl in real life but the fact that they have to probably deal with the quite powerful women around them. In Japan there are studies explaining that this fantasy is a reversal, a sense of weakness and incompetence that Japanese male was like spoiled by mothers also. In China it’s a little bit similar.

[…]

I found a lot of Chinese men and Chinese women have different aspirations…so does it have anything to do with the fact that they create the fantasy of easy submissive girl. Maybe it’s related. It’s a kind of reversal, that they can dream about submissive girl, but in reality, those Chinese men are rejected so badly by Chinese women, for instance on dating sites. The Chinese women are very demanding, and they publicize their requirements. And the Chinese men feel quite bad in a way. So I can see that Hong Kong and China is patriarchic. And I know that in reality, in the workplace, and at home, men have a lot of power. But that’s also just one way of investigating the reality. There’s also other realities where women have a lot of power as well.

This is the most personal, awesomely meta thing I’ve ever seen:
submissivesecrets:

[ Image: the Male Submission Art tumblr, with title changed to Male Submission Art With Over 15% Body Fat. The search box says “men who look like me” and the content column is blank. Text: I must have heard it over 100 times: “I like curvy women but skinny guys.” I know most guys aren’t supposed to be anxious about their bodies. But I wouldn’t be here in the first place if I was most guys. ]

This is a call to action! I’m going to look for new images for Male Submission Art that might also speak to this person, but I’ll probably need your help. Please share images that showcase male submission and body-positivity for men! In other words, the reciprocal of this awesome image.

I thought this was interesting in and of itself.
submissivesecrets:

Even though I know it’s probably staged, I want to believe women who model as dominants only ever play as dominant. I understand switching is valid, but I still feel betrayed when I see the same woman modeling as a bottom. All I want is a chance to play in this one role, so why should she get both? I try not to let this anger show, but it’s festering inside me. (Does this make me a bad person?)

But it turns out what’s even more interesting is the absolutely tiny freakin’ world we live in. Check this out:

maymaym: ALSO! o.O Can I just say it’s a little strange to see folks you know in #porn? @SavannahSly, I think http://tumblr.com/xfr2pn2bk2 is of you?
SavannahSly: @maymaym I knew that shoot would turn off a lot of male subs. I could care less. I do what I want, when I want. I Dominate life.
maymaym: @SavannahSly I’m not so sure he was “turned off.” I see some entitlement in “betrayed” but sounds way more like an emotional reaction to me.
SavannahSly: @maymaym Yeah, I don’t cut slack to subs who expect that switches can’t be incredible Dommes. I think it’s judgmental and narrow minded.
maymaym: @SavannahSly Well yah! :) I guess I’m focusing on “I understand switching is valid” & you’re on “betrayed/anger”? FASCINATING, in any event.
SavannahSly: @maymaym I wish they hadn’t lamely tried to cover my face. My make was super sexy for that shoot…

Anyway, consider me utterly fascinated by this. I threw it out to Twitter/StatusNet to try and get a sense of how people read this, and the responses were also fascinating. Here are some:

jasonriedy: @maymaym Even though I’ve gone mostly vanilla, I try not to be angry/jealous of people being themselves.
browneyedgirl65 (and): @maymaym sympathetic to his envy but the woman is not the source of the difficulty he is experiencing; same forces behind both, probably
relsqui (and): @maymaym Does that change any if you parse the secret as written by a dominant woman? Same remarks apply …
themaili: @maymaym Many women forget that much of the privilege they are missing outside is awarded in the bedroom. Side effect of #genderessentialism

So I guess, since I’ve already spent way longer examining this than I probably should have if I wanted to have a “productive” day, I’m gonna stop at this point and throw it out to you all. What do you think about this, and not only this, but the responses so far? (That’s right, let’s get all meta on this business!)
Also, as a final note, since it is an astonishingly small world, I realize the anonymous person who added this to Submissive Secrets may very well be someone who regularly consumes the content I produce, so let me just take the opportunity to add that I know how hard sharing secrets can be, and so beyond merely thanking you for doing so, I hope that the discussions this has already sparked and may continue to spark were at least insightful, if not comforting.

I thought this was interesting in and of itself.

This rooftop view has an American flag in the background. My sign reads:

I AM BRADLEY MANNING. Am I the enemy?

When the government charged Pfc. Manning with “aiding the enemy,” but failed to define who the “enemy” was, it became clear to me that what Maximilian Forte foresaw has become reality:

To the state, every defiant citizen is a terrorist, in mind if not in practice.

I am Bradley Manning because I care about knowing the truth about what my government does, and why. I think that wherever the people lead, our leaders will have to follow. Let’s lead with our eyes open, not closed.

Every time I see a picture that was once featured on MaleSubmissionArt.com, as this image of a man tied up and kneeling on a mattress was, my heart jumps a little inside. But this one made my heart skip a beat. In PostSecret style, someone wrote the following on top of it:

Oh how I wish you would.
I don’t see my liking being tied up, hit, “treated roughly” as weird. I’ve never felt ashamed about it.
But I’m afraid I won’t be able to find a partner similarly inclined.
I’m not poly, and have no interest in “The Scene,” play parties, nor casual sex (all of which is totally fine, but it’s not my thing.)

I want to give whoever made this picture a hug and thank them, profusely, for putting to words what so many people are feeling.
Whoever you are, thank you. You’ve just made the world a slightly better place.
