I received this question from Melusina over on Submissive Secrets, but I’m answering it here:

Hi May May. I’ve followed and enjoyed malesubmissiveart for a long time and love this new blog too. Upon discovering it, I instantly thought that I wanted a similar blog for dominant people. I feel that as a dominant woman, I’m often expected to keep up a specific kind of front and never show any doubt, hesitation or weakness and it would be wonderful to have a place to express those things.

After giving Submissive Secrets a closer look, however, I see that there are secrets here from both submissive people and dominant people. So would a blog specifically for dominant people be superfluous? Or do you think it could serve a purpose of its own?

Thanks.

Here’s my answer:

Hi melusinahp,

I’m glad you find my blog(s) valuable. :)

You asked: “After giving Submissive Secrets a closer look, however, I see that there are secrets here from both submissive people and dominant people. So would a blog specifically for dominant people be superfluous? Or do you think it could serve a purpose of its own?”

Well, “Submissive Secrets” is a pretty far-reaching project. Its About page expressly solicits contributions from people of all kinds, not only submissive men. A name is a funny thing; no matter what I tend to call my projects, people don’t always get the full or correct idea. I’ve since learned not to care so much what something is called and focus a lot more on what something contains. Don’t judge a book by its cover, and all that.

There’s nothing stopping you from creating your own secrets-style website. If you think you can do something that has a different value or that executes better than I can, go for it! :)

That being said, in much the same way that I wouldn’t (personally) expect to find a website like, “White people secrets,” I really wouldn’t expect to find a website about “Dominant people secrets” because both of those groups are, in their respective contexts, the power holders in their environment (in a sociological sense, not a D/s sense).

One thing I do think would be helpful, however, is to get a better view onto the secrets that have been contributed. For example, it would be nice to be able to see all the dominant-identified contributions separately from the submissive-identified contributions. Similarly, it’d be nice to be able to see all the trans issues contributions in a set, separate from, say, switch issues. Y’know?

This is my next-phase plan for the Submissive Secrets project but I haven’t really gotten around to it yet. When that’s in place, it will be a lot easier to see “specifically” the dominant voices, and so on. Much like you can do on MaleSubmissionArt.com now. (See, for instance, all of MSA’s images with only 1 model, or only the black and white images or pictures only with men and zero women in them, and so on.)

Would that address the need you feel you’ve identified with regards to “a similar blog for dominant people”? If so, maybe you can help me work on that. (All it takes is looking for patterns in the contributions and then writing up a draft of a taxonomy which we can work on together.) If not, then yes, maybe you should make your own secrets-style blog.

Either way, thanks for your interest and whatever you choose to do, rock on. :)

Cheers,
-maymay

I realize there’s no place to collaborate on a taxonomy together, yet, but I’m a little swamped right now and can’t jump on that immediately. If someone wants to put together a draft and send it over to me, feel free to do so. My email address is on my website’s about page, or you can just publish your suggestions publicly on your blog and send me the link if you’re into the whole public discussion thing, like I am. :)

This is the most personal, awesomely meta thing I’ve ever seen:
submissivesecrets:

[ Image: the Male Submission Art tumblr, with title changed to Male Submission Art With Over 15% Body Fat. The search box says “men who look like me” and the content column is blank. Text: I must have heard it over 100 times: “I like curvy women but skinny guys.” I know most guys aren’t supposed to be anxious about their bodies. But I wouldn’t be here in the first place if I was most guys. ]

This is a call to action! I’m going to look for new images for Male Submission Art that might also speak to this person, but I’ll probably need your help. Please share images that showcase male submission and body-positivity for men! In other words, the reciprocal of this awesome image.
