Everything about the way this meme began as an awesome anti-racist awareness-raising campaign and then got co-opted by a dog pile of ignorance, described below, is part of why I hate Halloween. I mean, Halloween is itself just one gigantic meme, except instead of the Internet, its context is a religion.
Boy, this meme was quite speedy in appearing after the most excellent “I’m a culture not a costume” campaign began blowing up. But see how fast that first one is quickly forgotten and, in fact, now devalued and ridiculed by this stream of joke PSAs.
Enjoy, enjoy. I get it. It’s clever. I’m not denying that. But please consider that the deep relief hiding in that laughter is because a very uncomfy statement that pushed back at white supremacy and was suddenly highlighted in an effective way, has now, again, been obscured.
Well. Until I had to go and bring it up again. Whoops!
